In October of 2014 Andrew Larigakis completed intensive training in Passive House design with the Canadian Passive House Institute. Passive House design principles apply to all types of building and are characterized by the following: high levels of insulation, no air leakage, no thermal bridges, high quality triple-glazed windows, proper orientation and heat recovery ventilation.
Passive house principles form the basis for truly sustainable building design. Of particular note in the Vancouver context is the elimination of thermal bridges. Seen most prominently in the concrete slab edges that extend outside of our high-rise condo’s, thermal bridges completely undermine the performance of the building enclosure.
