Quest Library Stair – “Inside the Old Mill”

Architects: Hotson Bakker Boniface Haden Architects (Andrew Larigakis conceived, designed and detailed the stair while Project Architect for Quest University with HBBH)

Laser-cut in the steel guardrail of the stair is a poem by Al Purdy called Inside the  Mill. When sunlight strikes the rail, the words are projected in light on the staircase (“manufacture of light”). I chose this particular poem because it reminded me of the mill at Woodfibre across Howe Sound from Squamish which had just closed down and been abandoned like the mill in the poem. The transformation of that mill to a poem on a Library stair speaks to the transformation of a working mill town into a university town and bedroom community.
