The design for this new house at 11th and Collingwood is an example of Vancouver residential architecture in Kitsilano. The design developed from the desire to build a contemporary house that meets the needs of today’s family while respecting the context of the neighbourhood. Working in close collaboration with the clients, we incorporated an open and functional arrangement of spaces around collective family activities and entertaining. Also included are enclosed rooms for more specific functions. An open plan living, dining and kitchen area tied to the south facing patio is the heart of the home. In addition to bedrooms, enclosed rooms included a small music studio for one of the clients.
We worked closely with the builder through the course of the project to ensure that quality was maintained while the modest budget for the project was not exceeded. Attention was paid to orientation, building envelope performance, heating systems (radiant under-floor) and construction to ensure energy-efficienciency.
