Berwick Child Development CENTRE, UBC
Phase 1 of our renovations to the Berwick Child Development Centre Building at UBC are now complete. The original building was built in 1976 and was a model facility at the time providing child care for children with developmental disabilities. The unique building consists of a series of distinct pods served by a corridor on one side with the whole wrapping around an exterior courtyard. It had very few upgrades since it opened was in need of significant improvements. Berwick is a facility full of joy, warmth and vitality which our design work sought to enhance whilst providing the practical upgrades required.
The program within the building has changed over time and will be modified again with these renovations. Existing child care space is being modified to provide full daycare for children aged 3 to 5 years. New kitchens are being provided throughout the building. Observation spaces are being converted to nap rooms, new finishes are being provided as well as upgrades to services.
Construction work is being phased over the summer of 2020 and 2021 to allow for continuous operation of the facility.
