CAMPBELL Residence, Galiano Island, BC
This project is for a largely new, 1700 square foot, waterfront house on several acres of land on Galiano Island in the Gulf Islands. The project takes advantage of siting of an existing house and re-builds new areas within the existing footprint.
The open area of the site is divided by two axes into four quadrants, each defined in its own way by a combination of built form and landscape. The proposal replaces areas of lawn with drought tolerant indigenous planting and a food garden.
The small house is low and compact in form with glazing primarily on the south and west elevation and shielded by large overhangs. The open plan living areas and large exterior patios are designed to suit island life. The post and beam construction takes advantage of construction skills available on the island.
